After racking my brains as to what to get Tracey for her birthday…what do you get for the woman who has everything….a luxury yacht? a $4 million mansion on a island somewhere? all slightly out of budget…I know a toy boy - oops got that one already. So went with a night at a hotel of her choice in HK and after a fairly quick discussion on which hotel to try over coffee somewhere in Causeway Bay, we decided to extend our stay in HK and book 2 nights at The Pen with Rolls Royce transfers of course - we are now googling iconic hotels throughout the world for future trips!
Booking it over the phone was not easy and eventually we went over to see them and do some shopping, well Tracey went diamond shopping while I tried them on. After viewing available rooms we booked and arranged the transfers and then booked an extra night at Lanson Place.
We eagerly awaited the call to say our Rolls Royce had arrived to pick us up but it was late! (Photo) I must say they are very “smooth”, perfect for selfies and on arrival we became very touristy and took lots of photos draped over the bonnet.
Check in
All done at reception and then shown to the room.
Room
Really nice room, classically modern with exceptional views of the harbour, small dining table, sofa, desk and most importantly plenty of wardrobe space especially for two women with large suitcases and on a shopping spree.
Bathroom was traditional but perfect, twin wash basins, separate shower and toilet, bathtub and lots of toiletries, plus fluffy towels and dressing gowns.
We got a nice selection of treats and fresh fruit but we did manage to have the most complicated coffee machine on the planet, it made plenty of hot water and decided to come on in the middle of the night which scared the shit out of us.
You also get about 4 large heavy iPads to control everything…again degree needed to get the TV working.
This was a smoking room.
Size: 43 sqm

Dining

Breakfast was excellent, very good selection with a la carte offerings served in The Verandah.
Did have room service and again very good.
Tracey booked the Afternoon Tea for a group of us which means you do not have to queue when staying there, even so it is extremely busy here with people coming in to look at the hotel. Champagne on top and it was a very good tea, some nice food but we did have to ask for extra items to cover the amount of people, plates for 4 does not go provide enough for 6.

Service
In general all very courteous and housekeeping are very helpful. The reception staff are okay but you do get the impression that they are doing you a favour. It just lacks that personal touch and perhaps this is understandable as it is one of the most Iconic hotels in the world and consequently it is full of tourists every day just looking around.
